#GivingTuesday and #OptOutside

This article is about two movements to create alternatives to consumerism #GivingTuesday and REI's #OptOutside campaign. They are examples of hashtag activisim, where social media like Twitter are used to spread a political message.

#GivingTuesday refers to the Tuesday after U.S. Thanksgiving in the United States. It is a movement to create an international day of giving at the beginning of the Christmas and holiday season. Giving Tuesday was started in 2012 as a response to commercialization and consumerism in the post-Thanksgiving season (Black Friday and Cyber Monday). According to the websight, "GivingTuesday is an opportunity for people around the world to come together through generosity in all its forms by sharing acts of kindness and giving their voice, time, money, goods, and advocacy to support communities and causes." It is important to note that it isn't necessarily about giving money, Giving Tuesday is also about giving your time to make the world a better place.

REI, a outdoor sporting goods store in the United States decided in 2015 to take a stand against consumerism creating the #OptOutside campaign which encourages people to not go shopping on Black Friday, but instead to spend the day out in nature. The company suspends its on-line sales and gives its 12,000 employees a paid day off to enjoy the outdoors. Here are some of the images associated with this year's campaign.

This is a video from 2016 that explains the #OptOutside campaign.
